Protecting yourself from Stagefright!

No, nothing to do with being on the stage ... a new Android vulnerability with a huge potential target audience.

I use Lookout security for Android as an extra layer of protection from Malware, they suggest it will war off Stagefright exploits, but also give some advice on how to harden your phone until Google issue security updates. The main one is:

"As an added protection measure, Lookout recommends disabling auto-fetching of MMS messages on a device’s default SMS app.

When an Android device receives a video message via SMS, by default it will automatically download the file. Therefore, disabling auto-fetching prevents an attacker from getting a device to automatically download a malicious video containing Stagefright exploits, which allows the user to delete the message and avoid device exploitation."

Luckily I have Nexus devices, so I should get the updates direct from Google when they are issued. Those of you on other models will have to wait (perhaps indefinitely) for your phone's carrier / manufacturer to issue an update.

I could always fall back on my super-hardened Nokia 108 :-/
